Alright folks, let’s talk seasonings! I have to admit, I’m a seasoning slut… There I’ve said it, it’s true. Whenever I see a new spice blend or seasoning mix I just have to have it! Partly because I believe that seasonings/marinades can really make or break a dish and partly because I just really love trying new products.
But have you ever really looked at the ingredients in most store-bought spice blends? Half of them are loaded with sugar and salt and the other half, well I just can’t seem pronounce most of them. Which then makes me start to wonder what the heck I’m actually putting in my body?! Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of quality spice brands out there that only use real ingredients and aren’t heavily processed. (Primal Palate, I’m looking at you!) But because I’d rather not serve up a side of chemicals with my perfectly grilled chicken breast, I’ve recently started to create my own spice blends -starting with my all-time favorite Cajun spice mix!
Honestly, I’m pretty sure I use this mix at least once a week. But it’s so good and so versatile you can practically put it on anything, or everything if you’re like me. And the best part? There’s absolutely NO chemicals, NO preservatives and you can tailor it to anyone’s spice level. (ie. Non-existent to “Omg I’m going to burn my face off”) Clearly I’m the latter here. And BONUS, it makes a ton so you’ll be set for months!
The Best Cajun Spice Mix
- 1 tbsp + 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 2 tbsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp + 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tbsp ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tbsp onion granules (can substitute onion powder)
- 1 tbsp dried thyme
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
- Pour all ingredients in a large airtight container. Shake to combine.
- Enjoy on chicken, fish, beef, veggies and whatever else you like!
