Ingredients used to make a white cheddar & pecan cheese ball coated in pomegranate seeds

Ingredients for Your Pomegranate & White Cheddar Cheese Ball

  • Cream cheese: Use a block of regular cream cheese for the best results.
  • White cheddar: This is where the flavor comes in! Feel free to use your favorite type of white cheddar. (I personally love the flavor of extra sharp cheddar so that’s what I always use for this recipe. If you want something a littler more neutral I would go for a medium to sharp white cheddar.)
  • Green onion: Adds depth of flavor and gives a pop of color!
  • Pecans: Love the flavor and crunch these give to your cheese ball! Not a fan of pecans? Try using walnuts or sliced almonds instead!
  • Salt: Just a pinch is all you need to help bring out your flavors.
  • Pomegranate seeds: My favorite part of this cheese ball! Not only do they add a refreshing element to your dish but they also make your ball look so pretty & festive! (Which is really the most important part right?!) I’d suggest using fresh pomegranate seeds if you can find them. They have much better flavor than most de-seeded store bought brands.

How to Make a Festive Christmas Cheese Ball

  1. Mix your ingredients together. First, let the cream cheese sit out at room temperature until it’s slightly softened. Once soft, add it to a bowl and mix it with your cheddar cheese, pecans, green onion and salt. Then use your hands to form the mixture into a ball.
  2. Chill it! Next lay saran wrap on a flat surface and place your cheese ball in the middle. Take a few small handfuls of your pomegranate seeds and gently press them all around the ball until it’s completely covered. (Try not to press too hard or the seeds will burst.) Once done, wrap your ball in the saran wrap and place it in the fridge to chill.
  3. Serve & enjoy. When you’re ready to serve, take the cheese ball out of the fridge and unwrap it. Then place it on a serving tray and serve it with your favorite crackers.

How easy is that right?!

What do you eat with a cheese ball?

Theres’ so many different options! Here are a few of our favorites.

  • Crackers: Any type of sea salt or multigrain crackers pair so well with this appetizer. (Our personal favorite crackers are Milten’s Gluten Free Crackers & Ritz!)
  • Crostinis: These can be either store bought or homemade. (We’ll usually serve crostinis with the our cheese ball if there’s a larger group of people to feed. They’re also much more filling than crackers so they’re a great option if you’re only serving appetizers too.)
  • Apple slices: Might sound weird at first, but their sweetness and crisp texture actually pair perfectly with your bold cheese ball flavors! I would suggest using a sweeter apple like Fujis or Honeycrisps if you can find them.

FAQ’s For Making a Pomegranate & White Cheddar Cheese Ball

  • Can I use pre-shredded cheddar cheese? I would skip it. Freshly shredded cheese has a much better flavor and no added coating.
  • Do I have to chill my cheese ball? Not at all. I personally prefer to because it holds the ball together more. (And I usually make this at least one day in advance to really build those flavors.😉) But if you’re rushed for time, you can serve it as soon as you form your ball.
  • How do I store my cheese ball? If you have any of your cheese ball leftover, simply place it in an air tight container and keep it stored in the fridge.
  • How long will my cheese ball last in the fridge? It should stay good for 1-2 weeks depending on how long you made it before having leftovers.
